Barbara Harrmann
Assistant to the Director
Barbara was appointed Administrator in November 2008 to replace Jenny McKay, who took up a new position in the Dean of Medicine’s office. Barbara has a Master’s degree in History and Journalism from Leipzig University. At the Institute, Barbara is responsible for the overall office management, including finance, human resources, and event management.

Markus Pickartz
IT Manager
Markus manages all systems, including computer networks and audio-visual systems in addition to web and print publishing. He had major responsibility for designing and implementing the online grant application system co-sponsored by the Institute and the UBC Office of Research Services. Markus has a BA in Theatre (Directing) from Arizona State University and a diverse and extensive background in IT systems.

Alfredo Santa Ana
Facilities Reservations & Office Clerk
Alfredo has served in this new half-time position since February 2008. He has worked in a temporary capacity for over five years at several departments across UBC. In addition to booking and administering the Institute’s conference and guest facilities, Alfredo also undertakes the day-to-day financial transactions of the Institute. He is completing his doctoral degree in music (composition) at UBC. The short melody that introduces each Institute podcast beginning with 16 September, 2009, is a commissioned piece by Alfedo, who also provides the voice over.

Karissa Wilson
Program Secretary
Karissa has been Program Secretary since September 2009. In that capacity she assists with the funding and delivery of thematic and residential programs, administers the Board of Trustees' meetings, and oversees the residential scholars' office area. Karissa brings to the Institute an extensive background in the hospitality industry, and her UBC experience includes administrative support positions in the Brain Research Centre and the Office of the Vice President for Research and International.
