A current strategic direction of the Institute is to create scholarly partnerships among the international network of institutes of advanced study to support research of lasting value and impact. The institute has to date concluded Memoranda of Understanding with two institutes, the Collège de France, Paris, and the Stellenbosch Institute for Advanced Study (STIAS), Stellenbosch, South Africa. A MOU with the Technical University of Munich – IAS is in process.
In recognition of its commitment to research exchanges and collaborations with its formal international partners, the Institute launched a special program to promote and fund a colloquium each year at one of its partner institutes.
Purpose
The Wall Colloquia Abroad is a unique event directed at enhancing relations with our international partners, increasing the international reputation of the Institute, and expanding opportunities for international research collaborations for Faculty Associates of the Institute. Like the Exploratory Workshop Grants held at the Wall Institute, Colloquia Abroad are small meetings to which scholars from a range of disciplines, from UBC and abroad, are brought together for a few days to develop and further research agendas on cutting edge topics. Holding the meetings in other parts of the world will enable key researchers to attend who might others not be able to do so.
Funding
As with the Exploratory Workshop Grants, funding of up to $20,000 is provided, plus up to an additional $5,000 to assist UBC researchers to attend. An Institute Faculty Associate will be awarded the funding as Principal Investigator.
Deadline
There is no fixed deadline. Faculty Associates of the Institute should bring their ideas for Colloquia Abroad to the attention of the Director.
